It would be a special honor for me to earn a DNP in Nurse Anesthesia in the particularly rigorous and competitive program at the University of ____. My pursuit of a career as a certified registered nurse anesthetist draws upon my more than ten years of experience as a nurse in acute/critical care, providing me with a vast experiential database to help me excel at U of _. Caring for critically ill patients and working under pressure has become my second nature.
Before this last decade in the ICU, I spent almost four years in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, paying meticulous attention to the CRNAs. One day a patient rolled into my PACU bay in respiratory arrest. The CRNA quickly intervened by securing the patient’s airway and administrating ventilation until adequate oxygenation was restored. The process was seamless, and his second nature. His clinical expertise in airway management and professional autonomy impressed me enormously. From that day forward, my desire to become a CRNA has grown exponentially. I transitioned to the most acute ICU in my hospital to prepare for the rigor and intense training required to become an exceptional anesthesia provider.
My critical thinking, attention to detail, clinical acumen, and professional communication skills have all been assiduously cultivated. Our CTICU, associated with ____ Medical College, is one of the largest and highest acuity Level-one trauma-designated hospitals in New York City and the Tristate area, providing me with the intense training needed to prepare for CRNA school. I am actively involved in my unit as a preceptor and mentor, and I hunger for still greater responsibility.
Most of my patients have had open-heart surgery and require one-to-one care with rapid, critical thinking based on a comprehensive knowledge of hemodynamics and the operation of several complex circulatory devices. As the open-heart care nurse, I receive these patients directly from the operating room, with reports at the bedside from the anesthesiologist, surgeon, and other surgical team members. Together we develop an individualized plan for the anesthetic recovery, hemodynamic management, ventilatory weaning, extubating, and pain management. I enjoy the challenge of titrating vasoactive medications, monitoring, managing, and interpreting the numerous complex factors involved in doing one’s utmost to achieve a clinically sound intervention resulting in optimal conditions for patient recovery.
As a first-generation immigrant, I have benefited from the learning resources of my church since I was a teenager. Now a mature and independent woman, I want to give back to my community. Many of my church members are of Asian descent with limited resources. I am passionate about helping local Chinese speakers translate and process correspondence, which has proved to be especially helpful to those who receive government aid and need help understanding government-issued documents. By providing translation they can better understand the eligibility criteria. I offer culturally sensitive care to the Chinese population since speaking their first language puts them at ease, and this is especially important during their first encounter with the anesthesia provider in any clinical setting. I connect easily with patients, build rapport, and provide culturally competent care. I frequently serve as a liaison between disadvantaged Chinese-speaking patients with a language barrier and their health professionals when necessary for the delivery of quality care. I help to facilitate a bidirectional communication channel between patients and healthcare providers, providing linguistically appropriate services that work best with Chinese patients and their families.
I completed Nursing School at the University at Buffalo, struggling academically during my freshman year. Over the course of the next two years, however, I repeated eight of the courses where I received a low grade, earning mostly A’s. I showed consistent improvement and continued excellence in my studies with each passing semester. I made the Dean’s List for the following five years throughout my undergraduate education, graduating with the highest distinction for my BSN, complementing the BS in Medical Technology that I had earned earlier. If I am selected for a space in your Nurse Anesthesia program, this will enable and inspire me to serve as a role model for other Asian applicants concerning what can be accomplished with hard work and determination in a nation with unlimited opportunities.
My central career goal includes completing the CRNA Program at the University of ____ and developing clinical competency. Later, as a highly experienced CRNA, I look forward to returning to academia by serving as a clinical instructor and educating tomorrow’s CRNAs to help ensure the continued growth and dynamic development of nurse anesthesia, sharing my bedside experience with new generations of CRNAs and promoting the visibility and recognition of our profession. I look forward to assuming leadership roles in professional organizations, serving on committees to influence policy, and promoting the advancement of the field. I will participate in continuing education for the balance of my career, staying up to date with the latest innovations in Nurse Anesthesia and advocating for nurse anesthesia, helping to ensure that our profession continues to thrive.
The University of ____ is my first choice among DNP Programs in Nurse Anesthesia because of the sheer excellence of the program, renowned faculty, and the latest technology simulation labs. The University of ____ sets a high bar for its CRNA graduates. The 100% first-time board pass rate results from a robust academic structure and rigorous preparation to produce practice-ready CRNAs by the time of graduation. Earning the DNP in Nurse Anesthesia at a rigorous program like the University of ____ will be one of the most significant challenges I will ever face. Given my exceptional undergraduate academic performance, broad clinical experiences, and careful and thorough research track record, I am confident that I will exceed expectations and distinguish myself. I look forward to joining your esteemed program with keen anticipation and sincerely hope to add value, confident that the University of ____ will give me the best preparation possible to enter the workforce as a CRNA.
Thank you for considering my application.
